Don is playing Mystic on Thursday November 4, and Black Bear Casino Friday November 5, which is the day before my birthday so I think I'll go to that one in lieu of going to see Crystal Gayle at O'Shaughnessy on Saturday November 6, my actual date of birth, as (pssssst) I hear her show at O'Shaughnessy is affiliated with an admittedly "pro-life" organization that provides financial resources to pregnant and new mothers as part of their mission, which "believe(s) in the sanctity of all human life...to encourage life by providing financial aid to women and babies in crisis, especially those women who might not choose life because of financial pressures."

A noble endeavor, to be sure, but still, I'm willing to bet the organization is a little sketchy, and besides that, girlfriend's a Republican. Yeah, so Merle Haggard is a Republican and I'd go see him in a heartbeat, unless of course the proceeds of his show were going to the purchase of PackNPlays for new mothers with the understanding that the mother's lack of a PackNPlays is the sole reason she may otherwise choose to have an abortion. Then I might not go see Merle. That's just dumb.

Anyway, what with girlfriend being as red as the blood of a fresh Nugent kill, and with her using the proceeds of her concert to ensure expecting mothers choose to carry and birth their children, children they then place in free PackNPlays, those PackNPlays providing that essential safety net that causes the mother to go "hmmmm...maybe I don't have to have an abortion, now that I have a free PackNPlay!"...aaaaaaaand I think I'd rather not be in that audience. And that audience might not want me in it. And especially on my birthday. I was an unplanned pregnancy, and my mother chose to carry and then birth me, on November 6, 30 years to the day before Crystal Gayle played the O'Shaughnessy. But she had a damned choice, and it wasn't influenced by someone giving her a damned free PackNPlay.

What is a PackNPlay anyway? They didn't have PackNPlays in 1980. They had scary play "pens" with netted siding (choking hazard when torn) and metal crank type mechanisms for lowering its sides (pinching hazard when cranked).

Ho boy! Are we excited about our next installment of Live Music/Dead Meat.

Allow me to justify our excitement.

For one, the bands are just, like, a perfect fit and will guarantee a raucous evening of fun. First up is Communist Daughter, followed by 10w40, then a little Old James and finally, The Guystorm end out the night.

In case the cause for all this hubbub isn't self-evident, I'll now point out that Johnny of Communist Daughter, also of The Boxcar Restaurant in Prescott, WI, will be grillin' up catfish after his set. Exciting! 10w40, well, they just straight-up rock and if you don't know it then you've been hangin' out at the wrong rural bars and farm parties. Also exciting! And, hold on to your cowboy boots here - Old James plays, like, twice a year. And one 'a those times is usually in Texas. We're bringing 'em back up here just for you, because we love them and we love you. And The Guystorm played our inaugural LM/DM show and rocked the Turf on a Wednesday night. Far be it from us to even anticipate what they're gonna do on a Saturday at the Nomad with a bunch'a party dudes back from the damned Lone Star State. Yee haw and such.

Also exciting - complimentary catfish and game meat tastings. Duh.

And fishing giveaways!

Speaking of which, the time, it's gotten away from us! But we're looking ahead now to our next Live Music/Dead Meat party, this one on Saturday August 15th @ Nomad World Pub. The tentative plan is to grill fish on the patio, and as per usual we'll be giving away all sorts of fun crap to complement your summer outdoor fun. Tentative lineup includes our good friends in Economy Team, a special reunion performance from Old James, and Omaha band Box Elders.

K.H.O. Appreciator and I will be Partying With Him at the Basilica Block Party. We hope He likes to talk about Fishing. We'll hit the nearest confessional and try to find out. The block party begins Friday night with headlining performances by The Jayhawks and The Black Crowes and continues Saturday night, headline performances by Counting Crows, The Hold Steady and Tapes 'n Tapes. Word is the show may be a sell-out on Saturday night so get there early. I guess we're not the only folks looking to talk to angels. About fishing. I'm back!! Did you miss me? You must have, judging by the calls, letters, emails and flowers! Anyhow, I’m back where I belong with two feet planted firmly in the blogosphere. So what’ve I been up to? Well, the fact of the matter is that blogging just isn’t paying the bills yet (no affront to you, Madame Editor!!), so I’ve had to focus my energy on my daytime gig as a psychometrician, measuring the tastes, talents, and personality traits of the masses.

I digress…

So, I’ve decided that a nice way to get back into this crazy business of blogging is by giving you a little taste of what I’ve been working on for the past few months.

My li'l buddy Grant (now of Lookbook, which will be playing at Live Music/Dead Meat next week take note please) is performing this evening as Sun Giant. His Sun Giant shit is amazing. I really like it very much. I would have pointed you in the direction of a myspace page but it seems to have dropped off the internet. Quick google search produced his EP and I hope it's cool that I post it right here. Go listen, and come down tonight! Grant plays around 10. He is opening for Bill Caperton and Peter Leggett, both cool and talented dudes and with Leggett fresh off a European tour with Kid Dakota. Go early for BLINGO! and tacos! Free, as always. This kicks off a weekly series Caperton and Leggett will be doing for a month of Tuesdays.

2 lbs. venison
½ lb beef
½ lb. pork
2 eggs
A couple handfuls (about a cup or so) of smashed mesquite BBQ potato chips (crumbs)
4 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
A good dollop of Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce
1 (10 oz.) can tomato & green chilies
1 lg. onion, chopped
a good amount of dry mustard... about a tablespoon or so
1 tsp. parsley, chopped
A cup burgundy wine (for the loaf. The rest is for you.)
Some Paprika (you should be putting this on EVERYTHING)
Some Nutmeg
Minced Garlic (just enough to taste)

Grind venison, beef and pork together (a fun job for the kids). Combine with remaining ingredients (save some of the onion and mix with brown sugar and just put it in a bowl and let it hang out for a bit.) Form into a loaf (duh); place in an ungreased pan. Bake it in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for an hour or so. When there’s about 30 minutes left, spread the mix of brown sugar and diced onions on it. Go ahead and put some more BBQ sauce on it too, if that’s what you’re into. I am. I also like to put some paprika and minced garlic on it. Then, pop it back in. Please serve it with mustard. (trust me… MUSTARD!)

In your kitchen (amongst other things):

-smoked venison sausage, duh
-Johngold, Macintosh, Granny Smith or other sweeter but slightly sour apple (medium sized)
-spices, sugar, yadda yadda
-apple cider
-butter

Melt butter (a GOOD sized pat) in a deep frying pan and add sausage to brown. After browning, set sausage aside. Add to the drippings: a dash of sugar, allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg and if you like spice, clove. Pour in about a cup of apple cider/water and sliced apples. Simmer until broth around apples is thickened. Add that wonderful sausage. Simmer covered for about 2 minutes. Pour into bowl. Serve hot.

For those of you lookin for a good, hot winter snack, this sweet 'n' salty treat will put the roses back in your cheeks.

I sat down with Eric and Justin of the Minneapolis band Hunting Club this week to talk about, what else, beavers, jerky and guns. Oh, and about their Saturday 12/6 EP release at the Uptown Bar (with The Van GoBots, John Snell the X and Self-evident, 5 bucks, 9:00).

Stuffed Pheasant: I kind of wish I was listening to Wynonna's Big Brown Beaver right now. Do you love that song or not so much?
Hunting Club: We live by the Primus creed.
SP: I think I spelled Wynona wrong. I think I might have spelled it like Wynonna Judd, and I don't want to know anything at all about her big brown beaver. Or red beaver. I think she's a ginger.
HC: Although, we must admit we're more big game hunters.
SP: Ah. Don't do do much trapping? No beaver chasing?
HC: Pelts are too small. We like 'em thick and furry. Adam is allergic to beavers.
SP: Buffalo are my favorite thick and furry animals. They are the thickest and the furriest. Who kills what in Hunting Club? I mean, like, who's most likely to be skipping out on practice during deer season versus say dove?
HC: None of us have ever shot a gun actually.
SP: Archers? Do you spear animals?
HC: Bob is an incredible nerf gun shot. I'm a pretty good roadkill artist.
SP: How so?
HC: I see an animal and instead of swerving I accelerate.
SP: Ah.
HC: Depending on the time of day, I'll vary my speeds to create different, distinct patterns. But we actually are sympathetic to guinea pigs.
SP: Hm. So you wouldn't make guinea pig art on the road?
HC: We've made a song about one in particular.
SP: Ah. Tell me about it.
HC: Well, it's kind of personal. Respect our boundaries please.
SP: Okay. Should we talk about beavers some more instead?
HC: Yes please.
SP: If I was a big brown beaver, how would I describe Hunting Club. You know, if I was a verbose big brown beaver?
HC: We are friends to the beaver, gentle souls if you will. I would encourage any beaver to pick up our new EP, Pretty Ugly, coming soon to a dam near you. It's good for a late night of beaver debauchery or a night in with the missus.
SP: Is it music to dance to, or more music to sway to? Seeing as how beavers enjoy dancing, but also swaying. Rocking is okay on occasion but it really depends on their hibernation cycle.
HC: It's music to polka. Soem waltzing may also be appropriate. I think the northern beaver is well-versed in the polka. So we'll go with polka.
SP: Beavers neither polka nor waltz, in my experience. Should they skip your EP release, or are you just being full of shit and so the beavers can expect to dance, sway and/or rock and should go ahead and come on down to your EP release which is... insert your EP release plug here... I'm sorry, I don't know you so perhaps I shouldn't be asking you to insert your plug anywhere... but carry on.
HC: Beavers can definitely expect dancing at our EP release, on Saturday, December 6th at the Uptown in Minneapolis. We'd suggest taking the Minnehaha Creek from the Mississippi or catching a cab from the Lake of the Isles area, if convenient.
SP: And say they had other friends from other communities of the animal kingdom. Which band are you playing with that the bluebirds would want to see? And the baby deer? And the mighty black bear?
HC: The Van GoBots, John Snell the X - Tenth for you non-Romans - and Self-evident. Those bands would be best enjoyed by terrestrial animals.
SP: I see. Do you hear that trout? STAY HOME. Can we talk about guns now?
HC: Yes, definitely.
SP: What's your favorite kind?
HC: Easy, AK-47 or any high-powered automatic assault rifles. We also know how to handle the magnum. If you know what I mean.
SP: If you can handle a beaver I'll trust you can handle a magnum. Can we talk about game meat now?
HC: Yes, but quietly. Adam doesn't like it when you say that three times fast.
SP: Yes but quietly. Yes but quietly. Yes but quietly. Is Adam upset now?
HC: It's semantics at this point.
SP: Okay.
HC: We like jerky. Slim Jims.
SP: Ooh, not game meat. Not interested. That corporate jerky'll kill ya. I've been eating elk like it's going out of style. Or like we have a freezer full of 700 lbs. of it har har har.
HC: We like Deerhunter. Deerhoof. White Rabbits. And definitely Grizzly Bear.
SP: Mmm. Fur eatin' er fur listenin'?
HC: Fur listenin'. Can't legally say we like eatin' - are they still on the endangered species list?
SP: We're Americans. We do as we please.
HC: We also like our rabbits frightened. We're also Americans, the most litigious society in the galaxy.
SP: Sure. So if you eat an endangered animal someone's likely to take you to court. So let's keep it on the DL and talk about something else. Can we talk about Ted Nugent now? Before we continue to devolve into more non-sequiturs?
HC: Yes, definitely.
SP: Okay good. So Ted Nugent once said this: "I am Classic Rock Revisited. I revisit it every waking moment of my life because it has the spirit and the attitude and the fire and the middle finger. I am Rosa Parks with a Gibson guitar." As with most things the Nuge says, it makes little sense.
HC: It really speaks to Justin's soul.
SP: Well then we'll just call Justin the Mill City Madman from now on. However, I want to learn a little more about your band. There are, what, five of you?
HC: Aye, five of us.
SP: So if each of the five of you was to identify with a civil rights activist or leader, a la the Nuge, who would it be.
(pause)
I realize this is a really deep, heavy question.
HC: What are civil rights?

We live in a pre-packaged world of top 40 no-talent hacks on the radio, Polo shirt chain restaurants run by Sysco trucks championing the cheapest radiated meat available and washing it all down with frat boy macro-beers with no flavor that aren't even American owned.

I believe we have the answer.

Welcome to Gastro Non Grata.

Gastro Non Grata is a local chef, booze and music show created by Craig Drehmel and Jeff Mitchell. It happens four times a year at the Triple Rock Social Club. Explaining the whole idea can be tricky, but we'll start with our next show, November 9th from 6-9pm.

The music of Eclectone Record's Hojas Rojas kicks things off, then Chris Staples and Aran Madden of Furthermore Beer are going to pour samples and expound upon the virtues of their small Wisconsin Brewery. Chef Mike Phillips of The Craftsman Restaurant will then grind, case and grill sausage to be eaten later by the audience. We raffle off a few hunks of animal and then folk-rock sensation Tuesday's Robot hits the stage and works the crowd into a well-meaning frenzy.

By the time Tuesday's Robot is done, we're eating sausage and drinking more Furthermore beer. We raffle some more meat and then The Wapsipinicon, a new band featuring members of Cloud Cult and Skirt takes the stage. Post-Wapsipinicon, we're drinking and eating some more. Then City Pages Picked to Click band Private Dancer takes the stage to classic rock your faces off. To end it, Andrew of Kopplin's Coffee in St. Paul is going to teach the audience a little bit about coffee and sober us all up for the ride home.

The best part about all of this is that it is free to anyone over 21 years old. We're bringing the three great worlds of food, music and booze together and we would love some help getting the word out.

Triple Rock, Friday 10/3/08

Knotwells: walked in a little late. My friend ditched me. Had to wait for her then finish my drink, that's my excuse. Goddamn it! I usually am not too worked up over missing any of the opening band but as soon as I walked in I sensed I shouldn't have waited on her ass - this band is fun! and not your typical crowd for an opener (read: a few disaffected girlfriends). I saw a floor of enthusiastic fans (hmm...though many of them female so perhaps these five dudes are popular with the ladies. Or old school LDSers). Anyhoo the crowd was big for an opener, and digging it. As for the music... I checked the old myspace to see if I could gather whether this was Knotwells or the 2nd band (I had waited for my deadbeat friend for a while y'know) - Knotwells. Their myspace description is apt - "Punk/Americana/Dub." Fun music, and the dudes looked like they were having a good time.

So far I am relatively sober. One Jameson down.

Marvelle: Thar's a fiddle up thar and someone doin' art. I don git it.

Are those bats or crows? Whoa and a moustachioed woman smoking weed? Two and a half Jamesons down.

Discussed going to Sodak for pheasant hunting with Patrick at the bar. Plans made for late October.

Dad In Common: I can't comment at length because of conflict of interest, but I'll say that the first time I saw them, at the Hex, they mentioned something about how they hardly ever leave Northeast, and that made me sad. Suffice it to say, they are good and you should check them out. Dynamic. Mellow. Good musicians. Again, conflict of interest. I won't gush over my good friend and colleague.

Notice how my reviews get substantially shorter as the night wears on? It's because I'm drunk and I'm gonna go get laid!

As such, I'm ducking out before

Magic Castles: play. But I've seen them before, at that late Entry show during the RNC. They are good, I endorse them - K I'm off to find sex and more drinks and perhaps a cab or magic car now. Bye!

The band played for about an hour, and the show was done before 11. We only caught the last ten minutes, so I can't really comment on whether it was worth the $15 door.
